HAMMOND, La. — A Hammond Police Department officer who is also the son of the city’s police chief has been arrested for a second time following allegations that he violated a court-issued protective order connected to an ongoing domestic violence investigation.
Corey Bergeron, 28, the son of Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr., was taken into custody on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after investigators with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office obtained a warrant accusing him of violating a protective order.
According to the sheriff’s office, Bergeron was booked on one count of violating a protective order. His latest arrest follows a September investigation that resulted in two domestic battery charges, including a felony allegation involving strangulation.
The case has also drawn attention to the investigation’s handling, requests for involvement by outside law enforcement agencies, and the professional status of Bergeron within the Hammond Police Department.

Second Arrest Follows Alleged Protective Order Violation
According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, investigators received information on Monday, October 19, indicating that Bergeron may have violated a court order requiring him to remain away from a woman connected to the domestic violence investigation.
WDSU reported that the woman’s mother contacted the television station and described video evidence allegedly showing her daughter asleep on a couch at Bergeron’s residence.
The mother reportedly provided the video to the sheriff’s office.
After reviewing information concerning the alleged violation, investigators obtained an arrest warrant. Bergeron was taken into custody the following morning, October 20.
Local reporting confirmed that he was being booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on one count of violation of a protective order.
The existence of the reported video does not independently establish the circumstances of the encounter or whether a criminal violation occurred. Those questions remain subject to the legal process.
Original Domestic Violence Arrest in September
Bergeron’s initial arrest occurred on September 28, 2026, following an investigation into allegations involving a dating partner.
According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, a woman contacted its Victims Unit on September 24 to report an alleged altercation with Bergeron earlier that morning at his residence in the Robert area of Tangipahoa Parish.
During the investigation, deputies reported obtaining evidence relating to at least one earlier alleged incident involving the same woman.
Investigators subsequently obtained arrest warrants and took Bergeron into custody at the Tangipahoa Parish courthouse.
The initial arrest resulted in two charges:
Bergeron was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail. Initial reporting listed his bond at $50,000, while WDSU subsequently reported that bond had been set at $30,000.
The criminal allegations have not been established as facts through a conviction, and Bergeron is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Alleged Victim’s Family Calls for Outside Investigation
The September arrest also prompted public statements from relatives of a woman who reported an alleged assault.
WDSU identified the woman as Ashling Mayo and interviewed her mother, Ashley Pucheu, regarding the allegations and the effect of the investigation on her daughter.
Pucheu publicly requested that authorities outside Tangipahoa Parish handle the investigation.
The family’s concerns arose in a case involving the son of Hammond’s sitting police chief, although the investigation was being conducted by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office rather than the Hammond Police Department.
During the September investigation, WDSU also obtained a protective order involving another woman who had raised concerns about Bergeron’s conduct.
According to that reporting, the protective-order application described multiple incidents that allegedly caused the woman to fear for her safety.
At that time, the sheriff’s office confirmed that Bergeron had not been charged with offenses arising from the allegations described in that protective-order filing, although investigators were examining the information.
Authorities also acknowledged additional investigative activity involving other potential complainants.
The publicly available reporting does not conclusively establish the relationship between every protective-order filing described in September and the specific order underlying the October 20 arrest.
Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Responds to His Son’s Arrest
Following the September arrest, Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. issued a public statement addressing the allegations against his son.
The chief emphasized that his department was not the investigating agency and said normal investigative procedures would be followed.
He also expressed personal support for his son and questioned the allegations based on materials he said he had reviewed.
In his statement, Chief Bergeron said he had personally examined videos and text messages that he believed raised questions about the accusations.
He further expressed his belief that his son would ultimately be exonerated.
The statement distinguished his responsibilities as police chief from his personal position as Corey’s father and acknowledged that the investigation must proceed through the appropriate legal channels.
The chief’s expressed belief in his son’s innocence is his personal assessment and does not constitute a judicial finding or an investigative determination.

Questions Concerning Outside Agency Involvement
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has reported making requests for outside agencies to assume responsibility for the investigation involving Bergeron.
WDSU reported this development following the October 20 arrest.
The request follows earlier concerns raised by members of an alleged victim’s family about the investigation’s handling.
During the initial investigation, the sheriff’s office stated that it would seek additional assistance if necessary.
The available reporting does not identify an outside agency that has formally assumed investigative authority.
The existence of a request for outside involvement does not, by itself, establish misconduct, bias, or improper investigative procedures by any agency or official.
Hammond Police Department Places Bergeron on Administrative Leave
The Hammond Police Department previously confirmed that Officer Corey Bergeron was placed on administrative leave following his initial arrest.
