I learned something from a cop named John Hird once and it effected how I viewed the people we served.
We had a call on afternoons, where a little girl was hit by a truck while riding her bike and it was pretty serious. It was John’s call, he was primary and he did the start to finish investigation.
I remember it being sometime in the summer or early fall, as we hadn’t gone to short sleeve uniforms yet; regardless the weather was nice and all of our spirits were up, we were enjoying the day and the call really made no impact to any of us as it was “just another call”.
We were in roll call a few days later and the girl’s condition was still unknown if she would even survive.
Talking about calls and updates, while waiting for Sgt Hare to start the shift, someone cracked a joke, “well, at least we don’t have to worry about her growing up to become a prostitute” and every single one of us, myself included, laughed our asses off.
Dark humor, it’s how we coped. But Hird didn’t crack a grin. He did, however, look at all of us with absolute disdain and we all quickly shut up.
What I didn’t know until Hird taught me, was that the people of our town were still people. The job had desensitized me so bad that all I saw were numbers, drug arrests, DUIs, domestic calls, etc.
I won’t ever forget the look on Hird’s face and how it felt as if by laughing, I let him down in some way. I felt ashamed and like I was being scolded. And that feeling went away as I took the time to self examine it and it became, “no, I am being unprofessional.”
As professional police, we care about the people we serve, even if they are criminals, people who hate us or children hit by cars. They are OURS to safeguard and serve. And mocking them is and always will be, unprofessional.
Take note, messaging me privately, making fun of any American who loses their life at the hand of law enforcement, will never be something I align or agree with you on.
Oklahoma City Police Officer DG Brewer seems to think that American citizens dying at the hands of cops, is something to celebrate.
I condemn him.
Every Sunday I host a private real-time Roll Call — no recording, no replay, no YouTube, no outsiders. It’s the ONLY place where you can talk to me directly, pitch ideas, influence upcoming episodes, and be part of the inside team.
