Former Robbins Police Chief Carl Scott publicly apologized and accepted responsibility for an incident inside the Robbins Police Department that resulted in a criminal battery conviction and the end of his law enforcement career in Illinois.
The statement came months after Scott pleaded guilty to battery stemming from a July 1, 2024 incident involving a man identified publicly only as James, who had reportedly arrived at the police station to file a complaint against Scott.
Incident Inside Robbins Police Department
According to publicly released video footage and statements made by both parties, the confrontation occurred inside an interview room at the Robbins Police Department.
Video released this week reportedly shows Scott escorting the man into an interview room, pushing him against a wall, and instructing him to sit down. Footage also allegedly captures Scott telling an officer wearing a body camera to “turn it off” before a physical altercation continued inside the room.
The man involved in the incident previously alleged that officers assaulted him after cameras were turned away.
“He took me in this room slammed me on this metal plate and he told the two officers to cut the cameras off and they just started beating me,” James said in prior statements to media outlets.
Scott Addresses Incident Publicly
Speaking publicly Friday, Scott acknowledged his actions and stated he should have removed himself from the situation.
“That’s something that I could’ve done. It just didn’t happen,” Scott said.
Scott stated the encounter escalated after the man allegedly entered the station recording video and, according to Scott, made threats involving Scott’s family. Scott claimed the incident became personal and emotional for him during the interaction.
“We humanize the badge,” Scott said during the interview. “So when we humanize that, then we understand the frustration.”
Scott also addressed the moment captured on video in which he instructed an officer to turn off a body camera.
“My mind wanted to hold a conversation with him,” Scott said.
Scott further stated, “I had zero ill intent.”
Neither James nor his attorney publicly responded to Scott’s claims regarding alleged threats toward Scott’s family.

Robbins Village Response
A spokesperson for the Village of Robbins stated the conduct shown in the released footage was inconsistent with village standards and confirmed that Scott was placed on leave immediately following the incident.
The village stated the actions captured on video were the basis for disciplinary action taken against Scott.
Scott Reflects on Career Consequences
Scott stated the incident had significant professional and personal consequences, including the loss of his law enforcement career.
