Federal prosecutors have charged Colin Gruenke, a 37-year-old Illinois State Trooper from Deerfield, with two federal counts: distribution and possession of child pornography. The severity of these allegations is matched only by the sheer hypocrisy of the accused’s role as a law enforcement officer.
Authorities say this investigation began last September after a tip from the messaging app Kik. Federal agents allege Gruenke used a VPN to hide his location while uploading child sex abuse material—behavior that demonstrates both a level of premeditation and a deep awareness of the criminal nature of his actions. Kik’s compliance with a warrant in April reportedly uncovered chat logs, images, and videos—at least 14 of which allegedly contained child sex abuse material.
Court documents reveal deeply disturbing conversations between Gruenke and another individual, explicitly discussing the abuse of children. These are not the actions of an ordinary citizen—they are the actions of someone entrusted with the authority, credibility, and power of the Illinois State Police. The fact that this conduct allegedly took place while Gruenke was still an active state trooper makes this betrayal even more intolerable.
The investigation unearthed more disturbing details: detectives learned that Gruenke was also involved in ice hockey as a referee, though it remains unclear if he is still active in that role. Federal agents reportedly gained confirmation of his residence after one investigator posed as someone searching for a lost dog. This is an officer who should have been safeguarding communities—not hiding behind a badge while engaging in the most heinous of crimes.
On Wednesday, a search warrant executed at the Illinois State Police office in Des Plaines allegedly uncovered deleted files of child sex abuse material on Gruenke’s phone—files investigators say they were able to recover. A simultaneous search of his home reportedly uncovered a flash drive in his nightstand containing around 200 videos of such material.
Following his arrest, the Illinois State Police placed Gruenke on administrative leave without pay.
