Lauren Semanchik’s harrowing plea for help went unanswered. It must not happen again.
On May 20, veterinarian Dr. Lauren Semanchik, terrified for her life, walked into Franklin Township police headquarters to speak to an officer. The desk clerk told her no one was available. She left, but not without hope—she called again later that day, leaving a distressing voicemail:
“I was looking to file a police report or potentially even a restraining order… my ex-boyfriend is a state trooper… I am especially uncomfortable … if you could give me a call back when you have a moment…” New York Post
That call was never returned.
A System That Protected Its Own
Months of text messages reveal a chilling reality: Santos stalked Lauren, vandalized her car, planted recording devices in her home, and even tampered with her gas tank—all while she begged for protection. CBS NewsNew Jersey Monitor
She reported threats to multiple agencies:

Franklin Township Police: No response, no return call. New York PostNew Jersey Monitor
-
Washington Township Police: Notified of keying her car; officer called Santos and told him not to contact her—protecting the abuser, not the victim. New York PostThe Times of India

Neighbors Heard Her Screams—Then Silence
Almost instantly after police failed to respond, tragedy struck. On August 1, neighbors called 911 to report gunshots and bloodcurdling screams. A patrol arrived—but left without finding anything. ABC7 New YorkNew York Post
The next day, Lauren and her boyfriend Tyler Webb, a firefighter, were found dead. Both had been fatally shot. People.comhttps://www.wsaw.com
Nearby, the shooter—her ex and state trooper Ricardo Jorge Santos—was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. People.comNew Jersey Monitor
A Department in Disarray
The damage was so evident that Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renee Robeson stepped in to take over the Franklin Township Police Department, citing “serious concerns” about its effectiveness. The police chief and sergeant were immediately placed on administrative leave. PatchNew York PostNew Jersey Monitor
Why It Matters—and What Must Change
Duty to protect should be absolute—even (especially) when the perpetrator is a law enforcement officer. This case reveals deadly systemic failures:
-
Bias protection for fellow officers creates suppressed accountability.
-
Victim reporting ignored—her plea should have triggered immediate intervention.
-
Delayed response sealed the fate of both her and her boyfriend.

Devastating to say the least 😪. My daughter was also murdered. Her death was covered up and ruled suicide to protect the sheriff who is the brother of our newly appointed Ambassador to the UK. Ive spent 4 years trying to bring the truth to light but Billionaires like Stephens’s in Arkansas have the power to control the entire state government, im living it, as many are. Prayers to this family that they are able to get justice for their daughter 🙏
