The fatal shooting of a 1-year-old boy during a police response to an alleged shoplifting incident in Senatobia, Mississippi, has prompted protests, calls for accountability, and renewed attention to prior controversies involving the city’s police department.
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), the incident occurred Sunday after officers responded to a reported shoplifting complaint at a Walmart store. The child, identified as Kohen Wiley, later died after being struck by gunfire.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an active investigation.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Account
In a statement, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said Senatobia officers located two women and a child leaving the Walmart and entering a vehicle.
According to the agency:
Authorities have stated that video evidence will be released after the investigation is completed.
Family Disputes Police Account
Kohen’s mother, Vellesiya Wiley, publicly disputed portions of the official account.
In a video shared on social media by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, Wiley stated that the driver was not traveling toward officers and asserted that the officers were positioned on one side while the vehicle moved in another direction.
She also questioned the original shoplifting allegation, stating she believed the diapers involved had been paid for.
Those claims have not been independently verified, and investigators have not released video footage or final findings.
Officer Placed on Administrative Leave
Authorities stated that:
Placement on administrative leave is a standard procedure and does not constitute a determination of wrongdoing.

Expert Commentary on Shooting at Moving Vehicles
Ian Adams, a criminal justice professor at the University of South Carolina, told reporters that modern policing generally discourages officers from firing at moving vehicles except under limited circumstances.
Adams stated that such encounters create additional risks because vehicles may contain other occupants.
No official investigative body has yet issued findings regarding whether the officer’s actions complied with departmental policy or applicable law.
Protests and Calls for Accountability
The shooting has generated protests and renewed calls for police reform and accountability.
Civil rights advocates have cited the incident as part of a broader national debate concerning police encounters and the use of force.
Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., issued a statement on Instagram criticizing what she characterized as misplaced priorities and calling for reforms aimed at protecting human life.
Prior Controversies in Senatobia
Community advocates have pointed to previous incidents involving the Senatobia Police Department.
2024 Walmart Parking Lot Arrest
Advocates referenced a confrontation involving Breshari Faulkner in which an officer allegedly threatened her with a Taser, removed her from her vehicle, and arrested her during a dispute over a handicapped parking space.
2023 Arrest of a 10-Year-Old Boy
In 2023, a Senatobia police officer was terminated after his involvement in the arrest of a 10-year-old Black child who had urinated in a parking lot.
According to reports, the child’s family later reached a settlement with the city in federal litigation.
Civil rights attorney Carlos Moore, who represented the family in that matter, has accused the department of maintaining a culture of misconduct. Those allegations have not been adjudicated as factual findings by a court.
