Lee County Sergeant and Deputies Fired Over Mishandled Use-of-Force Incident
In recent developments, former Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Sergeant Christopher Meyer has come under scrutiny following an incident involving the arrest of 45-year-old Cory Samek on August 11, 2023. Meyer, along with Deputies Bradley Davidson and Alexander Ricci, was terminated after an internal investigation concluded that the use of force during Samek’s arrest was not properly reported and documented.
The events unfolded around 2 a.m. when Deputies Ricci and Davidson were conducting a traffic stop near a gas station at Kingston Drive and Palm Beach Boulevard in Tice. Sergeant Meyer arrived on the scene to provide supervisory oversight. During this time, Samek, appearing intoxicated and carrying an open can of Twisted Tea, approached the deputies, engaging in aggressive behavior. He allegedly threatened the officers, challenging them to physical altercations and using profane language. Despite multiple attempts by the deputies to de-escalate the situation and encourage Samek to leave, he persisted in his confrontational demeanor.
As the situation escalated, the deputies were compelled to arrest Samek to ensure public safety and maintain order. However, the internal investigation by LCSO revealed that the use of force applied during the arrest was not adequately reported, leading to the termination of Meyer, Davidson, and Ricci. Sheriff Carmine Marceno emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability within the department, stating that any deviation from protocol would not be tolerated.
